Offshore lab: North Sea Innovation Lab
The essential part of making a change, is to act. That is why we initiated the North Sea Innovation Lab (NSIL): an offshore lab of 6 square kilometres, with 6 research plots, 12 kilometres from the coast of The Hague. NSIL is accessible for everybody who wants to pilot new technologies or test blue innovations for upscaling, such as co-use of wind farms. If you want to start commercial activity offshore, this is the place to start.
Plot 1: TCS - Akkerbouw op zee pilot
In plot 1, we are continuing piloting farm systems. In previous years, we have installed SMAC1.0, SMAC2.0 and SMAC2.A in the search for developing automated mechanical installation and cultivation systems for large-scale and sustainable seaweed cultivation at sea and within wind farms. This year, next to the SMAC2.A-model, two new version of will be installed: SMAC3.0. The cultivated seaweed as a result of this project, will be used for projects like ProSeaweed and Food safety pilot.
Plot 2: Offshore Floating Solar pilot
In plot 2, Oceans of Energy together with their project partners MARIN, ECN, TNO part of ECN, ONEBV, TAQA, will be testing their design for floating solar at the North Sea Innovation Lab to gain insight on how the design works under offshore conditions. Project starts in September 2019.
Plot 3: IMPAQT pilot
In plot 3, an integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) system will be tested, with both seaweed and mussels. This pilot will be equipped with a sensor setup in order to gather information on temperature, light, conductivity, salinity, chlorophyll-A, turbidity and current. Additionally, nitrate, phosphate and ammonium measurements will be taken. This data will be used for both the development of an intelligent management system (IMS) as well as for the development and validation of modelling tools of Deltares. Starting in October 2019 till June 2020.
Plot 4: Win-Wind pilot
In plot 4, Wageningen Marine Research, Wageningen Economic Research,Cramer Noordwijk Beheer, Noordzee Charters and Rederij W. van der Zwan & Zn are testing innovative passive fishing methods for crab & lobster, to check if they are ready to use within wind farms. Therefore, they will run different set-ups of small anchors to use in crabs and lobster fishing. The goal is to implement these fishing methods in the Amalia offshore wind farm. Starting October 2019.
