Our priorities for success
Climate change, and the growing demand for food and nutrients, challenges us to think differently and shift to sea(weed). We envision multi-use farms to create the optimal synergy of nature, food and energy on the North Sea. To get there, we work with 3 steps for success: product locations, farming & technology and markets & applications.
The right production location
What is the best way to use the North Sea for seaweed farming? For successful seaweed cultivation in The Netherlands, all parties involved need clarity and certainty about production locations. This means that farmers and wind park owners, fishermen and conservationists have to conjointly discover the best ecological and economical solutions for sea farms.
The best farming technologies
What are the best cultivation and processing techniques for all current and future sea farmers? Commercially viable sea farming requires high-tech machinery and management systems to optimize production. Researchers, engineers, operators, IT developers and others need to collaborate to develop the needed equipment and find a way to make it available for all farmers. It holds the promise for more automation and valorisation in a Dutch-designed industry of sea farming.
Healthy markets and applications
What is needed to increase the market potential of seaweeds? The business case for Dutch seaweed starts with safe, local, transparent, high-quality products by EU standards. Even though the European seaweed market is currently small, the worldwide demand for seaweed grows by 9% annually. Utilizing this market potential benefits not only Dutch seaweed entrepreneurs but also customers of seaweed products such as consumers, chefs, food developers, growers, dairy farmers, chemical engineers and energy companies.
