Our priorities for success
Climate change and the ongoing growth of the world population, challenge us to act different and shift from land to sea(weed). We envision multi-use sea farms to create the optimal synergy of nature, food and energy on the North Sea. To get there, we work with 3 priorities for success: product locations, farming & technology and markets & applications.
The right production location
What is the best way to use the North Sea for seaweed farming? For successful seaweed cultivation in The Netherlands, all parties involved need clarity and certainty about production locations. This means that farmers, wind park owners, fishermen and nature conservationists have to work together, to discover the best ecological and economical solutions for sea farms.
The best farming technologies
What are the best cultivation and processing techniques for all current and future sea farmers? Commercially, viable sea farms require high-tech machinery and management systems to optimize their production process. Researchers, engineers, operators, IT developers need to collaborate to develop these kinds of equipment and find a way to make it available for farmers. It holds the promise for more automation and valorisation in a Dutch-designed industry of sea farming.
Healthy markets and applications
What is needed to increase the market potential of seaweeds? The business case for Dutch seaweed starts with safe, local, transparent, high-quality products by EU standards. Even though the European seaweed market is currently small, the worldwide demand for seaweed annually grows with 9%. Utilizing this market potential benefits not only Dutch seaweed entrepreneurs, but also customers of seaweed products such as: chefs, consumers, food developers, growers, dairy farmers, chemical engineers and energy companies.
